Fatal Collision causes local residents to form a petition to Ontario Government

FATAL COLLISION
- The Haldimand County detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) continues to investigate a fatal motorcycle collision which occurred at a County Highway #56 and Highway #3 Haldimand County address on Monday, August 30, 2010 at approximately 11:15 a.m.
A grey Dodge van being operated by 91-year-old Roy Stewart of Haldimand County was southbound on County Hwy #56 when he entered the intersection of Hwy #3 and was struck by an eastbound Suzuki motorcycle.
The driver of the motorcycle, 54-year-old Allan Tigchelaar, also from Haldimand County, sustained life-threatening injuries and was transported to Dunnville War Memorial Hospital by Haldimand County paramedics after receiving emergency medical aid.† Shortly after arriving at the hospital, the 54-year-old was pronounced deceased.
Stewart and his passenger, 86-year-old Mabel Stewart, sustained minor injuries and were transported to Dunnville War Memorial Hospital for treatment.
Haldimand County Fire Department attended the scene as well and provided assistance to the injured.
Volunteers from Victim Services of Haldimand / Norfolk / New Credit are assisting with support of the affected families.
OPP Technical Traffic Collision Investigators are assisting with the investigation.
A post mortem examination was conducted to determine the cause of death.
Stop signs are present at this intersection for north and south bound traffic.
Hwy #3 and County Hwy #56 were closed for seven and a half hours to allow for investigation.
Committee formed and Petition circulating
As a result of the recent fatality at this intersection, a committee has been formed to PETITION the Ontario Government and the Haldimand County Council to have a stop light erected at the Intersection of Haldimand County Rd. 56, Haldimand County Rd. 32 and Hwy. 3. The petition also is requesting that a speed reduction be implemented to at least 60 kms. north and south of Haldimand County Rds. 56 & 32, and east and west on Hwy. 3 for a distance of at least 1 km at the said intersection.
